Resource (S1) (Period 6)

Course Description

Students work on individual goals in reading comprehension, written expression and math problem solving.

* In order to improve reading skills we work on identifying words used in context.  Many words have multiple meanings, and many idioms or figurative expressions are not meant to be taken literally.  We also read short stories (three to four paragraphs) and we then discuss and identify the main ideas, themes, lessons as well as supporting details.

* In order to improve written expression we work on daily writing skills which places a focus on penmanship, spelling, use of capital letters and lower case letters, and punctuation.  Writing prescribed sentences for practice followed up with precise editing and re-writing.  We work on writing paragraphs with a focus on creating a topic sentence, with three to four supporting detail sentences, with a closing sentence or conclusion sentence which mirrors the topic sentence but uses different words.  We focus on word choice, specific detailed language.

* In order to improve math skills we utilize the research based EasyCBM program from Oregon University to work on grade level basic math computational and problem solving skills.  These include fractions, percents, ratios, linear equations, reading and using graphs and applying data to solve problems.
